Dicing an Onion

Thanks to Netflix, my most recent obsession is watching Worst Cooks in America. It’s a Food Network show and if you’re never watched I would totally suggest it. I’m constantly appalled by some of the things I see on there. In one of the auditions, this girl liked to cook with dog food. Yep. Dog food. But, something that stuck out to me is the fact that a lot of people on the show had no clue how to properly dice an onion. Sure, you can definitely butcher an onion and make it look like it got thrown under a lawn mower but, you could also learn how to dice one correctly. So, here is a step by step guide (with pictures!) on how to dice an onion.

  • Prepping

Using a chef’s knife, cut the onion in half then peel it, but keep the root attached. The root will keep the onion together as you chop. Then, cut vertical slice evenly across the onion.

  • Dicing

Turn the onion 90 degrees, then make crosswise slices. Tada! You just diced an onion. Try to make evenly cut slices across so that the sizes are all the same.

  • Finished

Use the diced onion in soups, pastas sauces, salsas and more.
